Everyone Is Hungry for Something

Our FHFH Coordinators and volunteers are often touched and inspired by the people that they meet through the FHFH ministry. In fact, many feel they are receiving more (emotionally and spiritually) from FHFH than they are giving. Doug Martin in Illinois usually begins a conversation with something like, “Say, did you know that my U.S. Senator is interested in helping us out?” Tim Godbee, Bartow-Gordon (GA) Coordinator, often calls to excitedly explain his latest fundraising idea. Kerry Ketchum once called to tell us about a very needy and elderly Native American living deep in the mountains. When Kerry's Northern Arizona FHFH Program delivered donated elk meat to that gentleman he said, “I never thought that I would once again taste the sweet meat of the elk.”

On a cold evening last December I had the honor of talking with a woman named Jo about her meal of ‘delicious venison stew’. I asked how she ended up eating at the Mission House. It turns out she had recently been evicted from her nursing home. “That must be horrible at this time of year,” I said. “No, I’m living in the shelter now and I’m glad ‘cause I can come and go as I please and I’ve met a special friend,” she replied. I asked if her new friend was a man or a woman. “A man - a wonderful man!” she exclaimed. I smiled and asked if he was there with her. “Yes he is,” she said. I then asked her two final questions. “What’s his name and will you introduce me to him?” She looked me in the eyes and said, “His name is Jesus. You mean you don’t know Jesus?”

We all hunger for something—whether at the physical, spiritual or emotional level. It’s a wonderful blessing to see God at work providing nourishment at each of these levels for someone like my new friend Jo.
