No Food, Lots of Eats

Strange title, huh? Well, what it means is that even though our hunters did not harvest any deer for the hungry, our hunters (and everyone else) certainly did not go hungry on the handicapped hunt sponsored by International Paper over the weekend of October 25, 26 and 27.

The host camp for this hunt was the Hollywood Field Office (yes that really is the name of the hunting camp), with Ronnie Ritter being in charge of the hunt. Four handicapped hunters joined again this year for a weekend of fun and companionship. We certainly had that as we gathered around the campfire Friday and Saturday night, with a lot of laughs, and even more hunting tales.

The weekend started with everyone converging on the Western Sizzlin' in Arkadelphia for a great buffet meal, compliments of the restaurant. We then went to the host camp to arrange sleeping quarters. The arrangement was determined by who snored the loudest and how far away from everyone else we could put them. I slept in my van because I knew I would win the snoring prize while losing the popularity contest if I stayed in the bunkhouse!

Saturday morning, we all went our separate ways to look for "our" deer. It was not very cold, but the wind was blowing and it was cloudy. The morning saw the hunters straining their eyes for their first glimpse of a deer, but to no avail. At noon, we all went to the Hollywood deer camp for a barbecue meal catered by Pit Barbecue of Caddo Valley. The sponsors for the noon meal were UAP Timeland and BASF. It was a great meal and it was good to see that many members of the Hollywood club turned out for the occasion.
