"A Christmas Memory" is based upon a true story of how a grateful woman chose to thank FHFH for providing her sister with the winters' meat.
“Grandma! Grandma! Where did you get this old shirt?” exclaims young Billy as he makes his way through a mountain of memories in his grandmother’s attic. “There’s a picture on it and it says Farmeers and Hoonteers Feeding the Hoongrie!”
“Shhh, your brothers and sisters are asleep Billy. It’s been a long Christmas Day for them,” whispers Grandma as she takes the dusty cotton fabric in her aged hands. “Let me see…it says Farmers and Hunters Feeding the Hungry. Why I haven’t seen this for years!”
“I think that my daddy talks about those Far-mars and Hunt-ars…” begins Billy in a curious little voice.
“Yes, yes, your daddy gives them some of his extra deer every hunting season for people to eat who don’t have Christmas dinners and presents like we do,” explains Grandma.
“But Grandma…what about the shirt?” asks Billy.
“Oh yes. A long time ago when your daddy was very young, Grandpa and I met the people who began Farmers and Hunters Feeding the Hungry at a sportsmen’s show. We didn’t have much money but I told Grandpa to go get our checkbook so that we could buy one of their shirts. I wanted people to see the shirt and know that we appreciated the work of Farmers and Hunters Feeding the Hungry,” says Grandma.
“Why, did you a-ppreshi-ate them Grandma?” inquires Billy.
“The year before that, your daddy’s Uncle James died. My sister Jenny was left with four children—your Aunt Sally, Aunt Mary, Uncle John, and Uncle Raymond—to take care of. Winter was coming and she had little food or money. A friend from her church had heard of something called Farmers and Hunters Feeding the Hungry and he found out that they could get deer meat for Aunt Jenny—and others—who needed food that winter,” continues Grandma.
“But Grandma if you didn’t have much money either then why did you buy the shirt?” wonders Billy.
“We bought this shirt so that the people of Farmers and Hunters Feeding the Hungry would know that we were thankful for what they were doing. We also wanted to give back a little bit so that they could help others like they had helped Aunt Jenny. Would you like to hear another story about someone who helps others Billy?”
“Sure Grandma!” exclaims Billy.
“Shh…remember that the others are sleeping.” Grandma whispers, “Many, many years ago on a crisp, starry night, there were some shepherds in the fields outside of Bethlehem watching over their flocks of sheep…” |
