In WBOC’s Outdoors Delmarva video about helping the hungry, Mid Shore FHFH Coordinator Amy Cawley talks about how FHFH enables hunters to donate much needed meat to food banks and feeding ministries in Maryland. The year 2020 has been a year like no other for the Maryland Food Bank Eastern Shore. The Maryland Food Bank is seeing nearly double the food distribution across Maryland. Mid Shore FHFH donated nearly 400 pounds of venison to the food bank. One deer provides 160-200 servings of nutritious meat. Funding is needed to pay the processing fees for deer donated to FHFH’s participating butchers. Please help your neighbors in need by donating deer and making a financial gift to FHFH.
![]() This year has been hard for a lot of people. Everyone has been affected in some way by the COVID pandemic. Your family may be fortunate to celebrate Christmas this year with gifts and food for a holiday meal. However, there are many families who are struggling to get by due to soaring unemployment or work hours being reduced. What will their Christmas be like this year? It’s not just “will they have toys for their children?” - it’s “will they have food to put on their plates?” No one should go hungry, especially at Christmas. More than 50 million people may face hunger due to the impact by COVID. One in four children may not know where their next meal will come from. Christmas is the perfect time to remember the difference that sharing and giving back can make. Food banks, food pantries and feeding ministries can make the difference between someone having a meal or going hungry. FHFH provides nutritious much-needed meat to these agencies at no cost. The need is great and we need your help. Please consider donating to FHFH. Your gift will put food on the plate of someone who is hungry, a smile on their face and hope in their heart. They will know somebody cares about them. And you will experience the good feeling of knowing you’ve helped someone in need. On behalf of FHFH and the people who are struggling with hunger, we thank you for your generous support as we work together to end hunger in our country! Sincerely, ![]() Josh Wilson Executive Director FHFH received grants from three community foundations in Maryland for hunger relief during the COVID-19 pandemic. Thanks to grant funds awarded to FHFH by the Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore, The Community Foundation of Frederick County and the Mid-Shore Community Foundation we have been able to provide 4,430 pounds of beef and venison (17,720 servings) to date to the food banks, food pantries and feeding ministries in Caroline, Dorchester, Frederick, Kent, Queen Anne's, Somerset, Talbot, Wicomico and Worcester Counties in Maryland.
The Community Foundation of Frederick County has awarded $1,000 in grant funding to the Frederick County, Maryland Chapter of Farmers and Hunters Feeding the Hungry. This funding will assist FHFH in providing approximately 2,100 servings of nutritious meat to the food banks and feeding programs that feed the needy of Frederick County.
On behalf of those in Frederick County who struggle with hunger, we thank The Community Foundation of Frederick County for its generosity and support of our mission to end hunger. The Community Foundation is dedicated to connecting people who care with causes that matter to enrich the quality of life in Frederick County now and for future generations. For three decades, they have helped translate simple good intentions into powerful acts of philanthropy that build a stronger, more vibrant community not only for today but for the future. Inspired by a passion for the hunt and compassion for the hungry, FHFH is committed to addressing the problem of hunger in America. Since 1997 the organization has provided 21 million servings of meat to those in need. ![]() On Veterans Day we honor the heroic efforts of the men and women who served in the U.S. Military. Veterans Day provides us an opportunity to salute and thank the brave individuals who have served our country - past and present. Veterans, like millions of other people in our country, experience the same challenges of affordable housing and low income. In 2019, 1,139,738 veterans had income below poverty level with 490,158 of them being 65 years of age or older. (Statista, Poverty Status of Veterans in the United States in 2019, by Age). In 2018 there were 1.5 million veterans living in a household that completely relied on SNAP to supplement their food intake. (Military Families Learning Network, July 2019). However, SNAP benefits are not always enough to provide an adequate amount of food, so some veterans also reply on food banks, food pantries and feeding ministries to have enough food for themselves and their families. And of the more than 40 million people Feeding America and their network of food banks serve each year, 20 percent of households include someone who has served or is currently serving in the U.S. military. (Feeding America, June 2018). It is heartbreaking that so many veterans struggle to put food on their table! Our veterans fought and sacrificed for our country. Now we need to fight for them to make sure they don’t go hungry. One way to thank a veteran for their sacrifice and service is by helping them have enough food for themselves and their families. FHFH provides nutritious meat at no cost to food banks, food pantries and feeding ministries. With so many people struggling to make ends meet, especially during the COVID pandemic, your support has never been more important. Please consider donating to FHFH as we continue our fight to end hunger in our country. FHFH thanks the many men and women for their service to our country! Thank you for your continued interest in our mission of feeding the hungry. Sincerely, ![]() Josh Wilson Executive Director ![]() Thanks to Lehigh Valley FHFH (PA-08) the freezer at Parkland Cares Food Pantry in Pennsylvania is always stocked with meat. Lehigh Valley FHFH has supplied Parkland Cares Food Pantry with beef and venison since before they even opened their doors and continues to be a source of nutritious meat for the families they serve. Matt Coblentz is the Chapter Coordinator for Lehigh Valley FHFH. Parkland Cares Food Pantry thanks Matt and Lehigh Valley FHFH for our continued support! ![]() When there isn’t enough money to make ends meet and people are struggling to put food on their table, they often reach out to food banks, food pantries and feeding ministries for help. As we continue to suffer the economic effects from the COVID pandemic these organizations provide an important lifeline to people in need. These organizations often list meat as one of their top donation needs. The donation of fresh meat is typically less frequent than other food items, and due to the higher cost of meat, most agencies are unable to purchase sufficient quantities. FHFH has provided almost 21 MILLION servings of meat for people struggling with hunger since 1997! We rely on the donation of deer and livestock by hunters and farmers, financial support from individuals, businesses, churches, clubs and foundations, time given by our volunteers, and the partnership of our participating meat processors. Because FHFH pays the fee for processing deer or livestock, there is no cost to the hunter or farmer donating or the food bank, food pantry or feeding ministry receiving the much-needed meat. On behalf of FHFH and the people who are struggling with hunger, we thank you for your generous support as we work together to end hunger in our country! Sincerely, ![]() Josh Wilson, Executive Director ![]() FHFH welcomes Bernhard's Meat Market as a new participating meat processor with FHFH. Bernhard's Meat Market is located in Kerrville, TX. We thank them for joining us in the fight against hunger. You can donate deer, elk and livestock free of charge to any of the inspected, approved meat processors that participate with the FHFH program. If you would like to donate deer or livestock to FHFH, please CLICK HERE to find a participating FHFH meat processor. FHFH donated COVID-19 relief funds to the Bloom Home for Girls in Massachusetts. They used the money to purchase meat for their freezer this fall and winter. The first batch of meat purchased included beef, chicken and pork. Bloom is a ministry of Teen Challenge. We received this note of appreciation from Tori Ferrari, Director of Bloom Home for Girls:
"FHFH is such a huge blessing to our ministry! For the last few years since we opened this shelter home for teenage girls, we have been trying to find an individual or organization that could donate meat and stock our freezers for many months to come. As I was researching one day, I came across FHFH and fell in love with what they do for God's children! I reached out to Josh and he instantly responded, eager to help. He was flexible and willing to find a solution for our need and he fulfilled our request above and beyond what we even asked. The Lord used Josh and FHFH to bless us beyond comprehension. We are so thankful to FHFH and the partnership that we have now formed with this wonderful and generous organization. We pray that they are abundantly blessed in return!" |
